What is Community Supported Agriculture?
Community Supported Agriculture is practiced all over the world. The idea and practice was implemented in America in 1985. It has expanded all over the country as an alternative way to receive seasonal locally grown food. CSA is a wonderful way to create positive food connections and understand what is seasonal, how it is grown and who is growing the food you eat. Being a member of CSA allows for the gardening experience without all of the dedicated time necessary to grow a fruitful garden.
Where is KHFCSA located?
We are located in Southwest Wisconsin between the town of Belmont and a small town of Calamine. About 20 min’s from Mineral Point and Platteville, 10 min’s from Darlington, 1 hour from Madison and 3 1/2 hours from Chicago. Map.
Why is KHFCSA so special?
We work with our family and our community to create quality food in a sustainable environment. We also blend our knowledge of 10 years of organic farming with permaculture practices when working with the land. We are privileged to live and work on this beautiful 850 acre farm surrounded by woods, streams, and wildlife. We have greenhouses for season extension so that we can offer you early and late veggies and our modern packing shed allows us to wash and cool veggies to maximize their storage quality. We are Certified Organic.
Our members can participate in our special events on the farm.
How do I apply?
Please click here for an application and take note of discounts available.
What if I am not around for the whole season or there are too many veggies for me to eat?
That’s OK! You can choose to have a friend, neighbor, or family member pick up your box for you when you are out of town or you can split your box with someone who is interested in sharing a share.
Who benefits from CSA membership?
Everyone! As the farmers we get to know who is eating our food. The taste of fresh picked produce is incomparable! Peace of mind knowing how and where it was grown adds to the delicious experience. There are many veggies that grow well in this climate that maybe you haven’t tried yet, and may or may not love. You can try it out, share it with your friends and family and let us know what you think.
What is included in a Kings Hill Farm CSA membership?
We send out a newsletter in the box of veggies each week describing the accomplishments of the week, what is in the box, and tips on cooking and storing. There will be member only events on the farm and free camping available to members who enjoy getting out in the woods. There will be extra produce available in bulk at discount prices for preserving at those times in the season when certain crops are coming out of our ears! We welcome our members out to the farm to experience farm life. Please call and schedule in advance. The most important benefit is knowing where your food comes from, how it is grown, and that you are supporting sustainable agriculture which is a big step towards food security.
What is food security?
We grow our food organically and we are certified organic through Midwest Organics Services Association; MOSA is recognized for having the highest standards in the industry. Their regulations require the purchase of organic seeds or the endorsement from seed companies confirming no GMO in our seed orders. We can not use synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides. These items are just a small portion of the record keeping which gives us certification and our members and customers peace of mind.
What are the risks?
Farming faces natural disasters from time to time. Our members understand these risks. However, we make every effort to maintain continuity of supply for our members. We have been farming since 1998 and our system provides that we plant 40 % more seeds, enabling us to select the best plants to transplant. We then plant 20 % more to make sure that our yield exceeds our targets. Of course there are times where a certain variety still fails but we are very diverse and use more than one variety of every type of vegetable we plant so we are able to cover these occasions.
